Plasma One Review

The most token-aligned card on the market: Plasma One is a real, working stablecoin neobank (instant virtual Visa, self-custodial on-chain balance, broad fiat rails, transparent fee tables, genuinely strong headline cashback) built by the XPL blockchain team - and every part of its economics points back at the token. Cashback is paid in XPL, the paid tiers are bought with 12-month XPL locks, and growth is driven by referral codes rather than organic demand. The free Lite tier is honest value (2% on the first $500/mo, free virtual card) if you treat the XPL payout as a hot potato, but the Core/Platinum tiers ask you to lock a token that has lost ~95% from its ATH for 12 months to unlock rates that then step down to 0.25-1% anyway. Use Lite, cash out weekly, and skip the locks unless you would buy XPL anyway.

Red flags (7):
  • Token-launch-adjacent rewards flywheel: cashback is paid in XPL, the native token of the same team's blockchain (down ~95% from its 2025-09-27 ATH of $1.68 to ~$0.09 in October 2026), so every payout doubles as XPL sell pressure/demand exposure
  • Tiers are gated by 12-month XPL locks (Core: 20,000 XPL or $199/yr; Platinum: 100,000 XPL only, no cash option) - no early unlock, no downgrades, and the Card Account cannot be closed while a lock is active; the vault is a 'Plasma-controlled timelocked multisig' smart contract
  • Aggressive growth funnels: invite-only + waitlist, referral cashback windows, $10 first-spend and $200 high-spend referral bonuses, tier-upgrade bonuses, second-degree (multi-level) rewards, flash promos (free Core for a $100 deposit during a 7-day Android window, 20% travel boost capped at $50) - user acquisition is code/airdrop-adjacent rather than organic
+4 more red flags - expand before loading funds
  • Program parameters (rates, bands, caps, locks, fees) live in a Help Center that 'controls' over the Rewards Addendum and can change prospectively at any time; the Addendum itself only took effect 2026-09-26 - terms days old and subject to unilateral change; 'Plasma may terminate the Programs at any time for no reason'
  • US variant is a secured CREDIT card: you grant a security interest in your on-chain stablecoin collateral to the issuer ('This Account is a secured Account... you are furnishing and granting us a security interest in the Collateral')
  • Plasma is 'a financial technology company, not a regulated financial institution, bank, money services business or investment advisor' - no FDIC/FSCS/SIPC protection; disputes go to binding LCIA arbitration in London with class action and jury trial waiver under Cayman Islands governing law
  • Rewards paid as 'Spending Credit' are revocable promotional credit: no cash value, non-withdrawable, forfeited if the account is closed, and Plasma may substitute XPL for unapplied credit at its discretion

Plasma One homepage - live capture 2026-10-03

Plasma One is the consumer neobank of the Plasma blockchain team - a Cayman-incorporated company with UK and US subsidiaries, backed by the same investors as the XPL chain [3]. The product is real and working: instant virtual Visa, physical cards on the top tier, apps with 100K+ downloads and a 4.1-star rating; the public launch in June 2026 reported roughly $8-9M of beta card volume and 9,000 activated users [7]. The balance is self-custodial on a smart account, and card spending settles on-chain from your own wallet [3]. Two structural caveats shape everything else: the US variant is a secured credit card with a security interest in your collateral, and access is gated behind an invite or waitlist [2]. We list it as active but with honest token-funnel caveats - every economic surface points back at the XPL token [4].

Fees & Costs

The fee tables are transparent and published [5]. FX is tiered: Plasma adds 1% on Lite or 0.5% on Core, on top of roughly 1% Visa network FX; Platinum converts at the Visa rate with nothing added [4]. Fiat rails cover USD, GBP, EUR, MXN, BRL and COP with tiered flat fees - for example USD ACH costs $1 on Lite and $0.50 on Core [5]. Offramps cost 0.75-1% on Lite, 0.25-0.5% on Core and 0.10-0.2% on Platinum plus the rail fee [5]. Late payment runs up to $40 internationally or 2% of the balance on US terms [2][3]. Crypto deposits are free for USDT and USDG, free for USDC up to $30,000 per deposit, and arrive in about five minutes - but unsupported assets sent to deposit addresses may be unrecoverable [5].

KYC & Onboarding

Full KYC applies: legal name, date of birth, government ID, residential address, proof of address in certain countries and a liveness check [5]. One account per person, and access requires an invite code or a waitlist spot [5]. Availability is broad in marketing ("180+ countries") but narrower in the documents: seven countries are excluded outright, another twelve are blocked at the document level, and the US variant covers 30 of 50 states [3].

Coins & Top-up

Crypto deposits accept USDT (nine chains), USDC (seven chains), USDG and XPL; deposits arrive in about five minutes [5]. Fiat onramps span ACH, wire, Faster Payments, SEPA, SPEI, PIX and Bre-B [5]. The distinctive part is what you cannot do: there is no way to earn on the locked XPL while it is locked, no early unlock, and the account cannot be closed while a lock is active [5].

Rewards

The laddered cashback is genuinely strong on paper [1]. Lite (free) pays 2% on the first $500/month then 0.1%, per the Rewards Addendum [1]. Core ($199/year or a 20,000 XPL lock) pays 3% first $1,000 then stepping down; Platinum (100,000 XPL locked) pays 4% first $3,000 with AI-merchant rates up to 10% and a 10% airline boost [5]. But read the payment rail: cashback accrues in USD and pays weekly in XPL, a token that sits roughly 95% below its 2025 all-time high [1]. The community reflects this - one user describes locking XPL "hoping to break even after one year" [7]. Referral bonuses pay in revocable "Spending Credit" rather than money [1]. Treat XPL rewards as a hot potato: the Cash Out feature swaps them to USD through an on-chain DEX aggregator with your own slippage and gas [5].

Reliability & Red Flags

The token-funnel structure is the central fact: cashback in XPL, paid tiers bought with 12-month XPL locks, and multi-level referral rewards driving growth [1]. The lock terms are hard - no early unlock and no account closure while a lock is active - and the Platinum lock is a meaningful sum of an at-risk token at current prices [6]. Terms are young and volatile: the Rewards Addendum was rewritten days before this check, and promo terms get rewritten monthly [1]. On the mitigating side, the custody model is real, the fee tables are honest, the Visa issuance chain (Rain and Third National) is documented, and no theft or freeze reports surfaced [3][6]. Plasma itself states it is "a financial technology company, not a regulated financial institution" with no FDIC or FSCS protection [4].

Verdict

Use the free Lite tier and treat it as what it is: an honest 2% card on your first $500 of monthly spending, then 0.1% beyond, paid in a token you should convert immediately [1][5]. The paid tiers are a different product - they ask you to lock a volatile token for a year to unlock rates that step down toward 0.25-1% anyway, which only makes sense if you were going to hold XPL regardless [1]. The app, the rails and the issuance chain are real; the economics are a demand engine for the token [3][1]. If the lock requirement or the referral-driven growth pattern changes, this review should be re-checked.

What works

  • real product, live and orderable: iOS + Android apps, 100K+ downloads, instant virtual Visa (physical on Platinum, 'coming soon' on Core)
  • self-custodial balance: funds sit in your own on-chain smart account (Privy/Stripe keys), card spend settles on-chain - unusual among crypto cards
  • free Lite tier: free virtual card, 2% cashback on the first $500/mo, no subscription or lock
  • transparent, detailed fee tables per tier/rail (onramp, offramp, FX, ATM) in the Help Center
  • Platinum FX is genuinely 0%: no Plasma markup and no Visa network FX fee; USDC/USDT on-ramps from 9+ chains; fiat rails for USD/GBP/EUR/MXN/BRL/COP
  • Visa Signature (Core) / Visa Infinite (Platinum) benefits incl. unlimited Priority Pass on Platinum; AI subscription credits ($8-$40/mo)

What to watch

  • cashback paid in XPL, a token down ~95% from ATH; you carry the price risk between earning and cashing out
  • steep step-down bands: Lite drops to 0.1% after $500/mo; Core to 0.25% after $3k; Platinum to 1% after $15k - headline rates apply only to the first band
  • Core $199/yr or 20,000 XPL locked 12 months; Platinum only via 100,000 XPL locked 12 months - no early unlock, no downgrades, no account closure while locked
  • invite-only/waitlist during gated early access; heavy referral-code marketing
  • full KYC (ID + liveness + proof of address); only 30 US states; Ukraine, Russia, India, China, Turkey and others blocked at document level
  • US card is a secured credit card with a security interest in your collateral; programs can be changed or terminated at will; binding arbitration (LCIA London), class action waiver, Cayman governing law
  • onramp/offramp fees on every fiat rail (0.1-1% offramp even on Platinum) and ATM costs $2 + 2% on USD withdrawals

Fee reality check

IssuanceTier system: Lite free (some regions charge a $10 card fee; in most regions a $10 deposit is required to activate the Lite card - it stays in your balance); Core $199/yr OR 20,000 XPL locked 12 months; Platinum 100,000 XPL locked 12 months only (no cash option). First physical card free (shipping not included), extras $40 (Core) / $120 (Platinum), shipping $20-50 (Core) / free standard-$30 express (Platinum).

Fine printFX: Plasma markup +1% (Lite) / +0.5% (Core) / 0% (Platinum) PLUS Visa network FX fee ~1% on Lite and Core; Platinum converts at the Visa rate with nothing added. Offramp fees are tiered percentages (see topup_notes). Late payment fee: up to $40 / 2% of outstanding card balance (intl/US terms); returned payment up to $29. US card terms: no annual fee, no interest (0% APR), international transaction 1%. Crypto deposit addresses only accept USDT/USDC/USDG/XPL - unsupported assets may be unrecoverable.

How did a "Layer 1 for Stablecoins" with only 1,000 TPS raise so much?

'Plasma just launched the other day on Echo, and they were oversubscribed by $350 million dollars which is absoultely wild. Backed by Peter Thiel, Founders Fund, Framework, 6th Man, Bybit, and more..... What do they see that we don't? That TPS is hardly competitive when weighed against Mastercard/Visa who do 65 thousand TPS.'

Avalanche Card

A credible, well-backed self-custodial spend card with genuinely low fixed costs ($0 monthly/issuance/shipping, 0% APR) and true on-chain collateral custody in smart contracts. But it is not a privacy product (full KYC with SSN/national ID, GLBA data sharing), the rewards program is opaque (earn rates only in-app, statement-credit redemption at 70% of face), international FX is 'up to 3%' with a 1%-vs-2% disclosure conflict on the US side, and spending limits can be cut at Rain's sole discretion - with liquidation possible 'without prior notice'. Best for AVAX/stablecoin holders in the US (partial) and Latin America/Caribbean who want to spend against their stack; not for no-KYC users, and international terms (1-day payment window) behave much harsher than the US 21-day credit cycle.
